Hi, my name is Steph. Before I began my personal training with James, I had never been to a gym before in my life. I was 43, overweight, feeling generally lethargic, unattractive and in need of a diet and lifestyle overhaul.
Well, after just 4 months I feel transformed! James gave me the motivation and encouragement I needed to get myself on track to a healthier lifestyle. I have also discovered, to my amazement, that I enjoy running to help me maintain the new, slimmer and fitter me - something I would never have imagined saying before I summoned up the courage that day to walk through the doors of Unique Results!

I knew I was getting bigger but just did not want to accept it and laughed it off when people joked with me to leave some food on the table if we went out for dinner. At 16 stone I knew I needed motivation and I didn’t want to join a mainstream faceless gym where everyone did a set of something and then checked themselves out in the mirror.
In 2010 I finished the Reading half marathon 3 stone lighter. lt totally amazing. How the hell did I do that? I did it by being motivated, being positive and having a fantastic support network at Unique Results. The following year I moved to the London Marathon at 12 stone. I am completely hooked on training, if I do not run or cycle for 3 or 4 days I get tense like I have energy to release. I never ever thought that would happen.
The team at Unique Results are always friendly and on hand, all of the trainers will offer advice and help and are always positive, they all have the same can do mentality.
Before joining Unique Results in 2010 I had no energy. I couldn’t keep up with my 3 year old son and even going upstairs was something I avoided. I had been a member at 3 cheaper gyms before and I could come and go with no one asking me when I’d be back in or even care if I used the equipment safely. So in the past it was very easy for me to just say I cannot be bothered to go tonight and not have any goals to aim towards.
After my second son was born I gained a massive amount of weight. I had to do something, so with regular training I rebuilt my energy and stamina, along with a healthy eating plan and a new way of life. I lost 3 stone and went from a size 16 to a size 10 which I haven’t been for as long as I can remember.
I am now a much happier and more confident person. I continue to train regularly doing boxing, running or whatever is thrown at me each week to maintain my weight and fitness levels. Having to book in each week makes me come and makes it worthwhile. You have to be organised to achieve your goals and put the effort in but with Unique Results you can make it happen.
I made the decision to make a change in my life after spending time with my family and especially my two young nieces. It was almost an epiphany really of suddenly being hit with the realisation that my life had to change or it may not continue for too much longer the way I was living it. I needed more help than just joining a gym, I needed the motivation and I wanted to up the intensity of my exercise to kick start things again.
At the start of each month we set achievable realistic goals to work towards, including getting my personal best time for a 10km run down to less than 53 minutes (I never dreamt I would run 1km let alone 10km six months ago). It’s these goals that are such a motivational factor and when you succeed it’s a great achievement and gives you the desire to keep pushing yourself and improving more and more.
I owe Unique Results a massive amount for helping me in my lifestyle change and I feel forever in their debt as they have helped me go from completely rock bottom, not worried about existing, to being motivated, happy, proud, full of life and determined never to let my hard work slip and fall back to my old lifestyle and become the old me.
My decision was made. I walked through the doors of Unique Results on 23rd August 2007. At the age of 55 I felt I was getting a little out of shape and that I needed to get fit, lose weight and tone up. I must admit that at first I was very sceptical to say the least. I had never set goals like this before and on top of that I had never run in my life, not rowed for more than a few minutes and had never really been involved in resistance training. I had never even contemplated such a thing. Why would I?
Over the following weeks I could see my whole body shape improving. I rowed 5km without back pain, trained weekly with weights, have increased my strength and body tone and completed a major goal when I ran 10km in 1 hour and 11minutes. I feel so proud of running such a distance as 12 weeks ago I could not even run to the nearest lamp post. Now running is my favourite sport – unbelievable!

For many years I have lived what can only be described as a sedentary lifestyle. Doing little sport, going to the gym periodically and losing interest after a month or two. Only to go through the same frustrating cycle six months or so later.
Now nearly a year on I can say to myself that I have made significant progress, I’ve lost about 15-20lbs, which may not sound like much over a year, but coupled with a 7” drop in waistline a dramatically lowered resting heart rate significantly increased strength and muscular mass the change is very noticeable.
But the biggest change is I actually look forward to training. I find myself annoyed from time to time when circumstances beyond my control prevent me from training; I never thought that would happen.
